Formed in Power, Sustained by Gentleness

Numbers 12:3

Now the man Moses was very meek, more than all people who were on the face of the earth.

Meekness is a wonderful quality to have. Some definitions of the word aren’t entirely positive, but the Cambridge Dictionary describes it well, and serves the purposes of this article well; “the quality of being quiet, gentle, and unwilling to argue or express your opinions”.

Meekness is something that we should strive to display. We should walk in the knowledge of the power that is at our disposal as children of God, yet our manner should be that of gentleness and humility. Some years ago there was an advertising campaign by Pirelli Tyres whose wording inadvertently summed up this attitude perfectly; “Power is nothing without control”.

Interestingly, there are two Hebrew words in the Old Testament used to describe the breath of God. They both appear in Job 33:4 where we read; “The Spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty gives me life.”

The word used for ‘Spirit’ in this verse is, ‘Ruach’, which is indicative of a powerful blast of the nostrils of God. Where we read the word ‘breath’, later in the verse, it is the Hebrew word, ‘Neshamah’, which implies the gentle regular breathing of God. This verse shows that we were formed by the power of God, but our life is given and sustained by the gentleness of God. We are actually meek by design! Power and Gentleness are a part of our natural makeup.

Sometimes our circumstances try to dictate an alternative actuality which is in fact a falsehood. You can be tempted to believe that you are someone who is powerless. You can also be conned to believe that you are someone who is quick tempered or rash in manner. So, you act and behave accordingly. The belief can set in, that says, ”this is just the way I am”.

However, there is a better belief for you to follow. When you think that your situation is beyond your power to change; or when you want to respond to something with angst and ill temper; remember that you were formed in the power of God, and you are sustained by the gentleness of God. Let these things be the foundations upon which you stand, as you act, behave, and respond in the circumstances of life. Believe that you are inherently meek, and then be true to yourself in that, as you deal with each situation that life presents. In doing so, you will find that you have discovered the path to a more confident, assured, and peace filled existence.

What do I believe about myself when it comes to handling the situations and circumstances of my life? Do I believe that I have power? Do I believe that I am gentle and humble with that? Is it time for me to start believing it and to act accordingly?

Dear Lord Jesus, thank you that I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Thank you that meekness is at the core of my makeup. Help me to believe it. May that belief pour over into the way that I act, speak, and behave in all things.
