1 Corinthians 12:18
God arranged the members in the body, each one of them,as he chose
Imagine the above picture of the yellow birds, if the tree upon which they sat, and the background colouring, were also bright yellow. All of a sudden, the beauty that is seen in the colour of the birds is no more. Contrast is required to see the beauty. Difference is necessary.
Think of someone you know who is an incredible singer. Now imagine if everyone could sing in exactly the same way as this person. All of a sudden, that person is no longer an incredible singer. The contrast was required for their gift to be known and appreciated. Difference is necessary.
You are not the same as everyone else and that is where the beauty of you is found. It is in being you that your beauty will stand out. You won't have to try to show it. It will be evident for all to see. If you try to be like anyone or everyone else, your beauty, uniqueness, and talent, fades into insignificance; blurred into the background.
In our Bible reading today we see the need for difference. The verses surrounding the verse that we read explain how the body would not function, if it was entirely made up of the same parts. Neither would it function, if one part thought it didn't need the other. The application is clear; you are unique and that is exactly how you are meant to be; you are needed in your uniqueness in order to make the community of life work.
Have I been trying to 'fit in'? Have I been behaving, in certain environments, in a way that is not 'me'?
Help me Lord, today, to appreciate 'me' for who I am. Help me to be content in who I am. Help me to trust you to cause my beauty to shine, and to trust you to bring my gifts and talents to the fore, in the right way, at the right time.
